Girlguiding UK
In
1910
Robert Baden-Powell formed the Girl Guides with just a handful of girls and the help
of his sister Agnes. Although their numbers were small, the girls
passionately believed that they should have the same opportunities to
develop their skills and abilities as Boy Scouts.
It is extraordinary to think that from such humble beginnings Girlguiding UK
has grown to be the largest voluntary organisation for girls and young women
in the UK, and that there are a staggering ten million girls and women
involved in Guiding worldwide.
However, the story does not end here. With our Centenary fast approaching,
we are about to witness the next chapter in the story of guiding.Girlguiding
UK.
In 2010 we’ll see the biggest celebrations in our history as Girlguiding UK marks its 100th anniversary. Come and join the party by taking part in a range of once-in-a-lifetime activities. There’ll be:
challenges such as parachute jumps and
mountain climbing
commemorative activities, for example, street
parties and fancy-dress parades
adventures such as white-water rafting and
helicopter rides
community service projects such as helping
the homeless and regenerating city canals.
The celebrations will not only remember our rich history and reflect where guiding is today, but will also look to the future as we continue to grow. Take part and show others what guiding has to offer – you’ll help to ensure that we remain the leading voluntary organisation for girls and women in the UK.
